One of the primary tasks of periodontists is to treat and manage periodontal or gum disease. Periodontal or gum disease is infectious and affects the supporting structures of teeth and implants which, unchecked, can lead to tooth or implant loss. Periodontal disease leads to pocket formation and can result in gum recession, bad breath, tooth mobility, loss of chewing function, gum abscess and pain.
It has been shown that periodontal disease affects 46% of people by the age of 30. Experimental data shows that the prevalence, extent and severity increase with age and are modified by many factors including smoking status and the presence of systemic disease. Treatments may include conservative management and/or surgical intervention.
